It’s That Time Again!

Voting season!

This voting session is going to last us through until December, so each member can pick her five favorite books off of the list below. I’m enforcing the same rules as last time, which are:

All of the members can comment on this post and tell me which five of the books on the list below she would most like to read. (You may vote for your own suggestions).

I’m going to ask for two things to make my job of tallying votes easier:

1) Please list the titles of the four books that you want to vote for and nothing else. Don’t add things like: “But “such-and-such” book looks good too!” or “If I had more votes I’d pick “such-and-such” book.” Having other titles in your comment makes my job a lot harder, so thank you for your consideration.

2) Please don’t reply back and forth on other people’s comments. On most all of the posts, conversing and discussing is great! (Encouraged, actually) But please don’t do that here. I want a clear list of just the titles of everyone’s choices listed.

Thank you all and have fun voting!

This list of books for which you can vote for are, as follows:

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

City of the Beasts by Isabelle Allende

A Decision About 'Uglies'

For the time being, I have removed the book ‘Uglies’ by Scott Westerfeld from our list of books to read in the coming months.

Read the following and you will see why:

I do want to read Uglies and it sounds like a book that would be very interesting to discuss, so I hated to have to make this decision. If it wins (and it most likely will) I will add it to a list of books that we have pre-chosen to read in the future. (See HERE) I don’t want to introduce such a secular book to the group this quickly after it was started. I want to start as “far away from the line as possible”, if you know what I mean.

From what I’ve heard, ‘Uglies’ is very close to line and even well beyond crossing the line for some of our more conservative members. There is kissing and drinking mentioned and it is written from a very worldly world view.
I feel that once we get better acquainted with all of the members and everyone is comfortable with LLDS and the way that it works and all of the members feel ready to discuss world view issues and sinful behavior in books and how we can disagree with it, then I will pull out ‘Uglies’ for us to read. I think that it could be profitable for us to talk about what we agree with and what we disagree with and how the book could have been improved if the author had let Christ influence his writing.

That will probably be a long time away and even then, I’m sure that some of the members will chose not to read it, but that’s farther along in the club and it’s their decision. Right now, God is holding me accountable for mine.

I want to thank all of you for your understanding. God just did not give me a peace about reading this book at this time and I want to follow His will.

Thank you all.

Clarifying Book Suggestions and Voting for the Future

Oy vey, there has been much confusion surrounding this issues for me! (It might have been the same for you too…) Anyway, I think that I have finally come up with the proper solution to this scenario!

Here goes, and I’d love to hear if any of you have ideas on how I can improve this way of handling things:

—————————————————————————————————-

1) Book Suggestion List:

We just had our initial book suggestion period! We had almost thirty titles and there is no way that we can read them all in only four months. That’s where the Pending Book Suggestions List comes into play. As you can see, I added everyone’s suggestions to that list so that they are not forgotten and we can have them for reference in choosing future reading material!

2) Adding and Making Suggestions:

Say we read a book and everyone (or most everyone =D) loved it. Let’s pretend that the said book reminds you of another one that you read that was just as good. Share it with us! We have a flexible reading schedule so why not bump our other books back and read that one? Or we can add it to the suggestion list for the future. Either way, I want all of the members to know how easy this is: You remember a good book? Then tell us about it so we can add it to the list!

3) Books Taken Off of the List:

If a book isn’t chosen in a very long time, I will take it off of the Pending Suggestions list just to keep the list at a normal length. =D This, of course, does not mean that you can never suggest that book again again or that we won’t read it ever, but right then, it just wasn’t the right time.

4) Voting on Books:

I’m going to try many things for this one until we find what works the best. For this session we are commenting with out votes. In the future we will probably try polls and sometimes a book might even be chose just my a vast majority of the members going “Hey! That sounds good!” We’ll have to see how it all goes…

—————————————————————————————————-

I hope that the four above guidelines made things a little clearer for you. Seeing my ideas written out makes it all less confusing for me. =D

Don’t forget to vote for your preferred books on the post below!!!

Voting on Book Suggestions for Spring 2010

I know that I originally said that I would make a poll, but I have since changed my mind and am going to try doing the voting this way instead. (A post is coming soon to explain why and to tell what we are going to do for book suggestions and choosing for the future. I had a huge think-fest and I think that I finally got it all worked out! =D)

Alright, I wanted each member to have four votes- one for March, one for April, one for May and one for June. I didn’t know how to limit to just four votes in a poll, so I am going to ask all of the members to comment on this post and tell me which four of the books on the list below you would most like to read.

Thank you so much and I look forward to finding out what our next four books after ‘Emma’ will be!
